Rekeying vs. Lock Replacement: Making the Right Choice
When you want to deny access to old key holders, you have two options: rekey the existing lock or replace it entirely. Each has advantages depending on your situation.
Rekeying: What It Is
Rekeying means disassembling the lock cylinder, removing and replacing the internal pins, and reassembling it with a new key. The lock mechanism stays the same; only the key combination changes. Old keys no longer work.
Lock Replacement: What It Is
Replacement removes the old lock entirely and installs a new lock mechanism. You get new hardware, a new key, and often upgraded security features.
Rekeying: Pros & Cons
- Pros: Less expensive, fast, maintains existing hardware
- Cons: Limited security upgrade, locks may be worn
Replacement: Pros & Cons
- Pros: Modern security, aesthetic upgrade, warranty on new lock, can choose high-security option
- Cons: More expensive, may require door adjustments
When to Rekey
Just moved in and want to deny previous owners access. Lost a key but the lock is solid. Employee left and you want their key invalid.
When to Replace
